Sean McVay on what has become non-negotiable when evaluating players:
“There are certain things that have to be non-negotiables. What’s your football character like? I think that more than anything, especially because of some of the things I’ve gone through where I look back and say, ‘Man, I did not like the kind of leader or the caliber of person I was. I was fragile. I wasn’t resilient. The game honors toughness, but I think life and the game honor toughness, both mentally and physically. How many different ways can we measure that mental resilience?"
"What have they been through, and how did that shape who they’ve become in the midst of the journey?”
“When you go through each guy and have a personal message of appreciation and gratitude for him, the consistent theme is that everybody who has had any sort of success has experienced some adversity. Maybe when you’re in it, you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if it shapes you and callouses you the right way, growth demands that discomfort.”
“You don’t punish people who haven’t been through adversity, but I also think it’s important for guys to know, ‘We’re in this shit with you, too. Let’s build a relationship.’”
“Chris Petersen always used to say to me, ‘It’s really important that all our players know they’ll never meet the enemy on the sideline.’ I’d like to think the connection, the camaraderie and the enjoyment of each other’s success are what you see when you watch our group play. That’s the type of people we’re trying to identify.”
Another great week in the books at Eastern Kentucky University. Our 7v7 Team earned a spot in Elite Eight while earning the 16th overall seed out of 64!! Our Team was able to upset the #1 overall seed!! Our linemen finished 2nd Overall in the Lineman Challenge!#RiseAsOne
Couldn’t be more proud of the way our guys competed today against some of the best competition in the country at Ohio State University!
We finished the day with a winning record and earned the #8 seed out of 48 teams at the end of pool play. #RiseAsOne
If you coach a spring sport and the last time they saw the S&C was December, you can’t blame the S&C for your team being “weak” or not “explosive”.
It’s 2026, all athletes MUST train year-round.
Especially if you have a qualified S&C!
Dexter Lawrence contract with Bengals will be 3-for-70 ($23.3M/year). That is below market and team friendly.
There are 9 DTs making more per year, and Chris Jones is at $31.7M per year as an older player.
Compensation update: Now that he has passed his physical and the trade is official, newly-acquired DT Dexter Lawerence is signing a one-year, $28 million contract extension with the Bengals, per @WinSportsGroup
So in the end, Lawrence gets the trade he wanted while being contractually tied to Cincinnati for the next three seasons.
#Giants star Dexter Lawrence is being traded to the #Bengals in a pre-Draft blockbuster that includes the No. 10 pick heading to the Giants, per me and @MikeGarafolo.
NYG gets premium draft compensation, Cincy gets a lynchpin, while Sexy Dexy gets a new, big-money extension.
Sean McVay, on coachability.
We're going back in the vault. Early Invitational footage of McVay breaking down the one trait he believes separates good quarterbacks/players from great ones.
He quoted Brad Stevens: the best players want to be coached. Not tolerate it. Want it.
McVay defined the trait simply: The desire to improve by listening, then implementing. When a QB has that, it's contagious.
#Chiefs standout S Bryan Cook is expected to sign with the #Bengals, as they make a splash on defense in a deal done by @LIFTSPORTSMNGMT, per The Insiders.
It’s a 3-year, $40.25M deal. He gets $18M in year 1.
The amount of ppl that don’t understand what a catch is in the rule book flabbergasts me. And it’s not the officials. The two plays yesterday were not difficult calls, and they got them both right.
Absolutely blessed to announce my commitment to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thank you to everyone that has supported me, and thank you to all the coaches that have taken the time to recruit me through this process. #rolltech@Coach_Brennan@bbubna
A Christmas morning reflection…
95%
By the time your child turns 18, you've spent ~95% of the time you will ever spend with them in your lifetime.
There are specific windows, much shorter than you care to admit, during which certain people and relationships will occupy your life.
You may have only one more summer with all of your siblings. Two more trips with that old group of friends. A few more years with your grandpa. A handful of encounters with that coworker you love. One more long walk with your parents.
If you fail to appreciate these windows, they will quickly disappear.
Time Wealth is about an awareness of these windows.
But more importantly, it’s about taking action against that awareness.
It's about recognizing that you are in more control of your time than you realize.
That you can take actions to create time with the people you love most.
That you can bend these curves.
That 95% is an average—and you’ve never wanted to be average in anything your entire life.
So, show up to that recital. Plan that trip with old friends. Grab that quick coffee. Go on that walk with your parents. Have that meal with your sibling.
In the end, it's not about the journey, it's not about the destination, it's about the company. The people along the way.
Cherish the people and the rest will fall into place as it should.
Kyle Shanahan was asked if his offensive assistants give him new ideas on plays:
“Oh, yeah, it’s not only an open door policy, it’s expected. That’s what a lot of those guys’ jobs are. People give me a lot of credit because I call the plays and stuff, but that’s the easy part…
I always try to shoot things down and the guys that keep coming back with it and don’t have the answers, then you know how much they believe in it. And I always want people to make me believe in it so I can use it.
I always give the best example that when we move to new places after we look for houses, like the way I look at a house, I go in there and say everything that’s wrong with it. I can’t tell you how many times after my wife’s been in tears, she’s told me I’ve embarrassed myself in front of the realtors. She’s so upset and I’m like, 'what do you mean? This is the house I want. I love this house' and she’s like, 'well, you pointed out everything wrong with it'. I was like, 'I know, but they answered the good questions. They said we could fix that. They said that wasn’t as bad as I thought and I mean, do I have to say what I love about it? I’m just trying to figure out what I don’t and we’re good with that, so let’s do it'.
And it’s kind of how I look at plays, too. Like, once you go through all the things wrong with it, then we can solve those and worry about and figure out how to get around that stuff. Now, I think it’s a good play.”

P.J. Fleck: Boy, I don’t take those things for granted, I’ve been a head coach and I’ve been 1-11 before, that’s why we celebrate the way we celebrate. Some people don’t know, we celebrate that way every game, like it’s not like “oh, you crowd surfed,” we do that every game because I’ve been 0-9. That’s a long year. You never take winning for granted. I have never taken winning for granted, ever, and I never want our players to take that for granted.
