If you are a Southerner calling the people of Northern Nigeria, and their governments parasites because of the Value Added Tax contribution and receipt figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics, do yourself a favour and ask that same NBS to break down the VAT contribution by individuals and corporations.

It will surprise you to note that Dangote Industries and Dangote Refinery are the single largest contributors to the VAT pool of any individual or institution in Nigeria. Yet, Dangote is from Kano. However, more than 60% of his VAT is paid to Southern states. Have you heard him calling Southerners parasites or claiming that he built Lagos, even though he controls 19% of Lagos's GDP?

After Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu is the fifth largest contributor to VAT. But most of the VAT he generates goes to Southern Nigeria.

The two men in this photo personally generate more VAT and non-oil tax revenue than the Southeast and South-South combined.

I could go on and on about the untaxed food and livestock that comes from the North to sustain Southern Nigeria. But let us just realise this: We all need each other in this nation known as Nigeria. So let us quit acting as if we are better than others!
