Started the week VERY early on BBC News this morning… 💥

I joined the BBC’s Business Today programme to discuss London’s listings slowdown. From ElevenLabs to Synthesia and Wayve, there’s no shortage of innovation. The challenge now is making sure the UK isn’t just a great place to start a company, but the best place to scale, exit, and stay. And making that visible to the world’s top tech talent - link for anyone who wants to watch here: https://t.co/ke7pKfmCUc

*Bio-infrastructure* - a new term and market landscape we are launching today at Ada Ventures with Alasdair Thong our Venture Partner for Health, to capture the opportunity in investing in the enabling stack - the picks and shovels of the 100-year life. By the middle of the century, there will be 2 billion people over the age of 60. We need to build a health care system that is fitting for this coming reality - one that is proactive, preventative, affordable and fair.

Check out the landscape here: https://t.co/nh4S0Q6E6o and let us know what we've missed. This is hopefully the start of a conversation about how we build and fund the new healthcare stack.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the rise of 'fixer-upper' founders ⚒️

No, not the kind with a side hustle in DIY. I mean the ones pitching slightly faster, slicker versions of existing tech.

At @adaventures, we've seen a wave of these over recent years. Startups offering incremental improvements in categories that are already pretty crowded, addressing problems that have largely been solved.

And while aiming for ‘better’ is no bad thing, the rise of vibe coding and open source AI means being the 'best version right now' is no longer a defensible long-term strategy.

In my latest piece for Forbes, I dig into why investors like me are on the lookout for paradigm-shifting tech, and share three ways founders can show they're doing more than patching up yesterday’s ideas

What was Europe’s most backed sector in 2024? Healthtech. Breakthrough after breakthrough saw founders in the space raise more than $11bn. These market conditions, coupled with intensifying societal needs, give founders a real chance to transform global health outcomes, says Ada co-founding partner and healthy ageing lead @checkwarner in her latest @Forbes column.

Here are some of the ‘hidden gems’ of healthtech VCs like Check are paying attention to right now:
🔬 The power of proteins
🔎 Going further with GLP1s
🤖 AI as an accessibility tool
🧠 Meeting mental health needs (featuring insights from @emmacsilverman, Partner at @trailmixvc )

🌟Ada Ventures — 5 Years in 🌟

It's nearly the end of 2024 - so it's time for our annual reflection wrap!

See below for (nearly) everything we have got up to this year! ⬇️

[Ada Ventures @adaventures]

🌟Ada Ventures — 5 Years in 🌟

2024 has been a transformative year at Ada Ventures!

Read our annual year in review: https://t.co/eC2zhyGiev

We reported on our Inclusive Alpha® commitments. Inclusive Alpha® is an investment approach where an inclusive lens is prioritised in every part of the investment process. We’ve welcomed amazing new team members, reported on our innovative initiatives like free childcare for founders and launched AdaGPT.

This year, we closed our oversubscribed Fund II at £63m, backed by amazing LPs, and deployed £8 million across 13 new investments in groundbreaking companies like Radiant Matter, PHINXT Robotics and @LowCarbonM to name a few 🚀

We’ve also expanded our team and network, welcoming incredible talent including @michaeltefula, @jasmincbd, @dorothychou, @benjmnjn and Shanika Amarasekara MBE who are driving impactful change.

We’re incredibly proud of our portfolio companies, like @MaterialsNexus, which is revolutionising clean energy technology, Multiomic Health, whose innovations in diabetic care are truly paving the way for proactive health solutions and @researchgrid announced in November that they raised $6.5 million to make clinical trials admin-free.
