I’ve always loathed brutalism. But one thing I’ve noticed—and that’s caused me soften my disdain—is that brutalism works much better and can actually be aesthetically pleasing when it heavily incorporates the natural world or elements like water or greenery (i.e., ecobrutalism).

For example, all of these buildings are brutalist, and whereas Boston City Hall and the former Robin Hood Gardens housing project are soul-crushing concrete monstrosities, the Gerês House in Portugal and the Cornwall Gardens House in Singapore are beautiful and inspiring.
