@PowlsonDavid That is a great comment. Some people may think that the inert carbon from biochar is just buried there, but this portion of carbon may have some unknown functions, even for microbial activities.

We built a global database with more than 900 observations. Our results showed that soil carbon storage from biochar addition falls over time. Soil extracellular enzymes may play crucial roles in mediating soil carbon storage.
