As a med student, I’ve looked up to & learned from chief medical residents. What if we better understood the knowledge that docs have about each other’s quality - and harnessed it for quality improvement? New study in @JAMAInternalMed w/ @JMichaelMcW 1/🧵 https://t.co/R6eMNZGuGs
So grateful and excited to match @MGHanesthesia for residency training - what a surreal dream!! Many thanks to all of my mentors, teachers, family, friends, and patients over the last 8 years! #Match2024
Congratulations to the amazing MD-PhD Class of 2024 on achieving the matches of their dreams!♥️ “Kid[s], you’ll move mountains! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!” (from Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by the good doctor Seuss). Next stop: Graduation!
Patients of PCPs who were former chief medical residents reported better care experiences than patients of other PCPs in the same practice. Study results suggest that the profession possesses information about physician quality. @chenlucy8@JMichaelMcW https://t.co/mvzWJVc4k3
@DrHussainL@JAMAInternalMed@JMichaelMcW Thanks for your thoughts! We were wondering about your second point too, but didn’t have data on provider race unfortunately

@nathanvarady@JAMAInternalMed@JMichaelMcW Thanks Nathan for bringing up, esp since I meant to add to thread! We do address in paper- in short, likely both treatment and selection effects but can’t disentangle much here. If treatment, hopefully bodes well for future efforts to teach these skills! Lmk if you need a copy
@A_Schwa @JMichaelMcW@HMSHCP@HarvardHBS@HarvardMITmdphd@NIHAging@NIGMS Agree! Limited in what we could tackle to answer both Qs. Patients of chiefs were slightly more likely to report that their doctor spent enough time with them - but would be cool to have data to see if the length of actual time corresponds, or to better measure productivity!
Info about physician quality held by the profession as an underused resource
In residency we pick exemplars (chiefs) & deliberately repurpose them to make us all better
But we don't do that in practice - think about that...
New paper w/ @chenlucy8 (I predict a future chief...)
This is just the start of a research agenda on physician quality & excited to hear thoughts. Grateful that my 1st dissertation paper is out. Speaking of exemplars, I learned an absolute ton from @JMichaelMcW! Thanks to @HMSHCP@HarvardHBS@HarvardMITmdphd@NIHAging@NIGMS 🧵/🧵
Importantly, we aren't suggesting just identifying high scorers on pt experiences (or insert metric of choice). Quality measurement is full of limitations! But perhaps including some subjective info from trusted colleagues can help pave a new approach to physician quality. 7/🧵
