“José for the saint. Daniel because he wasn’t.
The First Supper — where power, money, and technology meet the one thing they all once had: an idea, and the courage to believe in it.”
#TheFirstSupper
I am the youngest of 24 siblings.
I came into this world after my beloved mother had undergone a procedure so she would not have any more children. Yes, just as you read it.
Doña Elva Mejías, after having 12 beautiful and healthy children, decided on her doctor’s recommendation not to have any more. The doctor had been very clear with my father, Faustino:
“If she gets pregnant again, she could die.”
They quickly made the arrangements for her to have what was then commonly called a “coil” inserted.
Two years later, after experiencing nausea and discomfort, they went back to the doctor.
And the doctor basically told my old man:
“You know I told you she couldn’t have another child. You should’ve tied that thing up…”
That was not exactly how he said it, but I always wanted to tell that part that way.
And that is how they discovered that this atomic beauty was already on the way, whether by the hand of the Supreme Being, the cleverness of nature, or simply because I had decided I was coming.
The months passed, and the day finally arrived.
After several hours in the waiting room, the doctor came out and told my father, whom everyone knew as Tino:
“I may have to save one. You know she has children who cannot be left without their mother.”
My father used to tell me that he looked at the doctor and said:
“Listen, this one is going to be the last. Save him.”
And he decided to name me José.
My father always repeated a phrase that I never fully understood for many years:
“José for the saint. Daniel because he wasn’t.”
As a child, it just sounded like one of those things my father would say.
Today, I understand it differently.
Looking at this image, that phrase came back to me because what it represents began long before money, business, or any achievement.
Everything begins with an idea.
The people sitting at this table represent an extraordinary concentration of capital, technology, influence, and power.
I represent the other side of the scale.
The one who is still building.
The one who works.
The one who falls.
The one who gets back up.
The one who still has ideas and keeps believing, even when his bank account reflects the exact opposite of those sitting beside him.
And that, to me, is the real meaning of this image.
My value in this composition does not come from pretending that I am already one of them.
It comes precisely from the fact that I am not.
Because I represent something every one of them once was:
A person with an idea, long before there were results to prove that idea right.
That is why “The First Supper” makes sense to me.
It is not only about power.
It is about the starting point.
This image is conceptual art. But what it represents is very real.
If you believe it cannot be done, that will probably become your reality.
If you believe otherwise, you may discover just how interesting the journey can become.
