The most exciting place I visited in 2019 was Ukraine, for the @Chernihiv2018 dig. This promontory was originally surrounded by 2 rivers and became a fortified landing point for Scandinavian settlers. A beautiful spot, with incredible archaeology!

So... the ravens & full moon brought us an unexpected burial!! BUT it’s not who the mound was intended for; this is a later burial cut into the mound, possibly in the 12th century. Why? 1/3

I have joined a Ukrainian/Polish collaboration excavating this 10th century mound in a burial ground near the hillfort settlement of Shestovitsa, a little further north from our Vypovsiv @Chernihiv2018 excavation

One of the stunning 1000 year old silvered glass beads we found in Ukraine, it’s broken so you can see how it’s made: at the bottom there’s a thin layer of silver sandwiched between the inner & outer glass. Video below of it fresh out of the ground! #vyp19 Photo: @JessicaTreacher
