Professor of Viking Studies, University of Nottingham. FBA. Mostly working on @RagnasIslands these days, but still keen on #Vikings, #runes and #OldNorse.
Merry Christmas to all from the @RagnasIslands team, with the last in our little series of vignettes about Christmas in the Saga of the Earls of Orkney. https://t.co/So5JRcxyVy
Episode 6: ... on the sixth day of Christmas, a ship arrived and off the ship came ‘a man in a blue cape who had hidden his hair under a hood... https://t.co/ccMrWwZQCk
It was a pleasure to work with Aquilia, a British children’s magazine, on their December #Vikings issue! The issue is a mix of facts and fun that will hopefully inspire the next generation of Vikingologists! Plus the spreads by different illustrators are simply gorgeous!
Since 'tis the #festive season... we thought you might like some Christmassy(ish) tales from #Orkneyinga saga! First up... 'The host with most...' (tune in until the 24th for further episodes!) #Orkney https://t.co/SVhSzVqGHB
@SAS I see from the internet this is an ongoing problem for years: why does your website think I am a bot? This is sudden, after years of successfully using the website. None of the suggested solutions works.
🚨VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY🚨
We are looking for a volunteer for the 2025 season to help with bird monitoring, ringing, and obs maintenance! Full board included. Long term volunteers preferred, but all applications welcome! Contact [email protected] for more info

My new book is out in the world! GOLD ON THE HORIZON explores the literary landscape of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. How does Susan echo Anglo-Saxon poets? What is Eustace's connection to The Faerie Queene? What about the Blowing Stone? And much more...
A hefty lump of Flint/Chert from the Papay shore today. This rock type is completely absent in Orkneys geology; but occasionally found as glacially transported pebbles (usually on east side beaches) or, like this, a 'ballast stone' from the days of wooden ships. @BritGeoSurvey
Instead of celebrating my iconic arrival, some of you thought that mocking me will boost your likes? Cute 💅
Since 1947, I’ve stood tall as Norway’s fir-mly rooted thank-you - I’m a timeless symbol of unity, not your clickbait. 🎄

@jpwarchaeology Where do you get your Staffordshire Oatcakes in Nottingham? (Sainsbury's used to do them but I haven't seen them there in ages...)
Good luck with the book sales!
