Alternative view: there is no additional cost to the Crown / taxpayer, apart from moving and installing the pieces. He is not acquiring new pieces of art, just moving them out of storage to be displayed.

The Prime Minister carries on official business at both of his official residences (Rideau Cottage and Harrington Lake,) and both of his offices (West Block and Langevin Building.) PMO in the latter includes three floors of offices, meeting and function rooms, etc..

It seems entirely reasonable that the country’s elected head of government should have access to the Crown Art collection / Art Bank for these spaces. Circulating these works, rather than keeping them permanently in storage, allows the Canadian state to highlight important elements of Canada’s cultural heritage.

Would it be preferable for these important spaces to feature blank walls? Or to liquidate the Crown collection, or keep it in permanent storage? Or perhaps, as some PMOs have done in the past, to cover the walls in photographs of the current occupant? 😬

I for one think the Prime Minister should be commended for celebrating and displaying part of the country’s artistic patrimony.
