It's clear schools should have been cancelled, offices closed, and an emergency declared ahead of this storm. But we have a mayor whose last priority is governing, a gov't wholly allergic to investing in infrastructure, and economy that demands we show up to work during a flood
a lot can be done about urban flooding and stormwater. none of it will be, as long as our public institutions function primarily as sites of extraction for cops and corporations
Yesterday: @LindaLeeforNYC introduced legislation that would postpone NYC’s landmark climate legislation by a decade, cosponsored by over a dozen CMs.
Today: Deadly flash flooding across New York City.
It’s time for Council Members to pick a side: us, or disaster.
Finally got a press release update from a city agency about the storm and flooding and Adams has responded in the only way the city knows how: Alternate side parking is suspended.
People love to hate, but everyone criticizing the mayor right now should ask themselves: What did *you* do to alert New Yorkers to an impending flood and to mobilize municipal departments to respond to it in a coordinated and effective manner?
"His 60-day notice didn’t expire until Saturday, he said, but staff at the shelter had told him he had to depart a day early."
In other words, he was forced onto the street during a State of Emergency while the streets and subways were flooding.
There are no words.
New #HalfPastCapitalism feat. @cheyennaweber on the experience of a decade and a bit of organizing in NYC. Great convo.

@gabrielwinant Nothing new. When I went there a couple decades ago they created "Free Speech Zones" to prevent protesting or even handing out leaflets. We had to sue them to get it rescinded. Different admin, but they're all politically aligned. And you're right, WV gets ignored by the media.
