Grand Canyon, USA 🇺🇸
The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, located in Arizona, USA. It stretches for about 446 kilometres and reaches depths of more than 1.6 kilometres in places.
The Colorado River played a major role in carving the canyon over immense periods of geological time, exposing layers of ancient rock.
Indigenous peoples have maintained connections with the region for thousands of years. In the modern era, conservation efforts helped protect the landscape, and the Grand Canyon became a National Park in 1919.
🧠🇨🇳 China Approves NEO Brain Implant for Commercial Use — A Major Milestone for BCI Technology
China has approved NEO, a coin-sized brain–computer interface (BCI) developed by a team from Tsinghua University and Shanghai-based Neuracle Technology, for commercial use.
The approval, granted by China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), marks the world’s first market approval of an invasive BCI medical device.
NEO is designed for adults aged 18–60 with severe paralysis caused by cervical spinal cord injuries. It reads brain signals related to the intention to move and translates them into commands for an external assistive device, such as a pneumatic robotic glove. 🤖🖐️
Unlike Neuralink’s N1, whose electrodes are inserted directly into brain tissue, NEO uses a minimally invasive epidural approach, placing its electrodes above the dura mater. The system also uses wireless power and communication technology.
Before receiving approval, NEO was tested in 11 hospitals, with 32 cervical spinal cord injury patients receiving implants. Reports from the clinical trials say all implanted patients achieved brain-controlled grasping, while hand-function scores improved significantly with BCI assistance.
The technology could help people with severe physical disabilities perform everyday activities such as grasping objects, drinking water and handling household items with greater independence. 🥤🖐️
This gives China an important lead in commercial BCI approval, while Neuralink’s N1 remains in the human clinical-trial stage rather than being commercially approved.
⚠️ Important: Commercial approval does not mean the technology is already available to every patient or that all technical challenges have been solved. Researchers still need to establish long-term safety, reliability and effectiveness on a much larger scale.
