MASSIVE RIFF MONDAYS comin’ at ya with “RADIUM GIRLS” a collaboration with @pussyrrriot, Delila Paz (The Last Internationale), Aimee Interrupter, Mish Way, produced by @BloodyBeetroots concerning industrial crimes in the small town of Ottawa, IL (next door to the Morello ancestral home of Marseilles, IL). The girls at the factory were encouraged to lick the deadly radium laced paintbrushes to a point to increase productivity and profit of glow in the dark watches. Many died of terrible cancers, their bones disintegrating in their bodies. Aware of the dangers, the company still encouraged the practice, telling the girls that radium “made their cheeks rosy.” The girls had to be buried in iron lined caskets to keep the radium in their bodies from leaking into the soil. The ensuing lawsuits led to important labor protection legislation (currently being undone by the Trump administration.) My grandmother was a nurse at the hospital where the Radium Girls were treated and I place flowers at their monument every year.
