NO! Semmai La Chimera dovesse avere buoni incassi, Tempesta acquisisce credito potenziale per film futuri
To @theAcademy, my two cents about the International Oscars rules...
This week, the Academy is receiving the list of the last movies submitted by each country in the International Oscar race, along with all the usual controversies that come with it. I believe it's time for this to end.
The rule for the International Oscar is simply obsolete. It has to change. Things have changed, and the Academy needs to acknowledge it. They can't be under the influence of a country anymore, and they shouldn't depend on the choices of a government.
For instance, Iran is putting filmmakers in jail; do they really think Iran will send these filmmakers' movies into the race?
The Polish government is at odds with one of its best directors, so they probably won't send her movie into the race.
Populists and extremists are in charge of some prominent European countries. Do they really think these governments will send a movie that challenges them?
The Academy has a responsibility. The Academy must stand for its values, for freedom of expression, and for cinema as a means to fight for freedom; they must ensure this freedom. They can't let a government, even the most democratic of them, decide which movie should represent their country at the Oscars. It's just not right.
The solution is quite simple: they should use the same rules for foreign language movies as they do for English-spoken movies. If it has been released in the U.S. before the end of the year, it can compete. It's pretty straightforward.
But you might argue that this would eliminate many small countries that rarely get to release their movies on American screens. You'd be correct, which is why I'm suggesting they add a rule. If a foreign language movie has been selected in one of the biggest international film festivals (Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, Sundance, Telluride), it should automatically qualify for the race. It's a relatively easy rule to apply.
This also means that there could be more than one movie from the same country competing. That's absolutely right, and I don't see why this would be a problem. After all, they don't ask studios to send just one of their movies for the Best Picture category.
If among the best international movies, there are two Japanese ones, so be it. It's supposed to be about the best movies in a foreign language. If it's the same language twice, I don't see why it would be a problem.
Throughout the year, the Academy does a terrific job. Their fight for equality, freedom of expression in cinema, preservation of cinema history, and all they do for the defence of cinema as an art is truly remarkable. For that, they have the gratitude and admiration of movie lovers worldwide.
That's why I'm taking the liberty of sending this message. It's time for things to change on this matter too. And I know that the Academy is never afraid of making changes. It's time…
Notizie nell'insieme estiqaatsi (cit.)
