Who's Still Holding For The Bigger Move?

$NEAR is having a serious move right now, and for once the market is starting to pay attention.

But I still think a lot of people looking at NEAR are looking at the wrong thing.

The old narrative is “another L1 from the last cycle”. The more interesting reality is that NEAR has spent the last few years building infrastructure around chain abstraction, cross-chain liquidity, AI agents and increasingly tokenised assets.

NEAR Intents is probably the biggest part of that shift. Instead of forcing users to understand which chain, bridge or liquidity pool they need, the user simply expresses what they want to achieve and a network of solvers handles the execution across chains. NEAR Intents is already supporting cross-chain swaps and expanding the amount of liquidity and assets that can move through the system. (Near Intents)

Then look at what is happening outside crypto.

Today, the US SEC announced a five-year conditional exemption aimed at allowing regulated venues and liquidity providers to facilitate onchain trading of tokenised US stocks. Importantly, the framework covers tokenised securities representing actual shares with shareholder rights, rather than simply synthetic tokens that track a stock price. (Reuters)

That matters because tokenisation is moving from a crypto narrative towards actual financial market infrastructure.

Now imagine that world alongside AI agents.

An agent that can hold stablecoins, interact with tokenised stocks and other RWAs, find liquidity across different chains, execute transactions and operate continuously needs much more than another blockchain. It needs payments, settlement, liquidity, cross-chain execution and secure AI infrastructure underneath it.

That is where NEAR becomes interesting.

NEAR AI is working on confidential AI infrastructure and agent-focused systems, while Chain Signatures allows applications on NEAR to interact with assets and accounts across other blockchains. The pieces are starting to look less like a traditional L1 roadmap and more like an attempt to build infrastructure for an internet where software can actually transact.

And the tokenomics are changing at the same time.

NEAR has already reduced its maximum annual issuance from 5% to 2.5%, while the longer-term direction is to move towards revenue-funded security and potentially take new issuance towards zero if protocol revenue becomes sufficient. Intents revenue is also being captured by the protocol and directed towards $NEAR buybacks.

So you have a network trying to increase the amount of economic activity running through its infrastructure while simultaneously reducing the amount of new supply required to secure it.

NEAR is currently only around a $4B asset.

I don’t think the interesting question anymore is whether people will eventually notice $NEAR.

They clearly are.

The interesting question is whether people have actually understood what they are buying.

Because if Intents becomes major infrastructure for cross-chain liquidity, tokenised assets become a genuine financial market, and AI agents start transacting autonomously, NEAR is sitting directly in the middle of several of the biggest changes happening in crypto.

That is a very different thesis from “another L1”.
