Merga Bien, the Pregnant Woman Burned as a Witch

She lived in Fulda, in what's now central Germany. She'd been married three times. Her first two husbands died and left her their money, in a town beginning to see witches at every turn was the worst kind of luck. A widow with an inheritance made an easy target.

She'd married her third husband, Blasius Bien in 1588 and moved away with him. Then a falling-out with his employers brought her back to Fulda. The timing couldn't have been worse.

At this time Fulda had a new master. Prince-Abbot Balthasar von Dernbach returned from years of exile in 1602 and set about purging anything he didn't like. He handed the work to a judge who was seeing witches everywhere he looked. Investigation's opened in March 1603 and the arrests came fast. By the time he was done, around 250 people were dead.

Merga was taken on 19 June 1603.

Her husband fought for her. He went to the Imperial Chamber Court at Speyer and argued she was pregnant, and by law a pregnant woman couldn't be tortured. His arguments didn't work.

Instead, they turned the pregnancy against her. She and Blasius had been married fourteen years with no children between them. So how was she suddenly expecting? The men judging her had an answer ready. The baby was the Devil's.

The rest was the usual grim inventory of a witch trial. They said she'd poisoned her second husband and the children she'd had with him, and pinned a death in her old employer's household on her as well. There was the standard charge of attending the witches' sabbath. Old deaths and bad luck, scraped together and dumped on one woman.

She held out for weeks. Then the torture broke her and she confessed.

The recorded line from that confession is "Ah God, so I will have done it." It doesn't read like guilt so much as exhaustion. Sadly at that point she knew that the truth had stopped mattering.

In the autumn of 1603 they burned her.

And one final heartbreak, her husband who had stood with her all the way, was handed the bill. The family was made to pay for her imprisonment, her torture and her execution. They killed her, then charged her people for the wood.

Merga Bien became the most famous victim of the Fulda witch hunt. Not that fame did her any good. It arrived centuries too late.

Was she burned for being a witch? No. She had money, and a husband stubborn enough to take the court on, and then she fell pregnant after fourteen childless years and handed them the excuse they'd been looking for. The men judging her had decided on her fate long before she ever opened her mouth.
