Peñafrancia Beyond Naga

There is no doubt about the depth of the Bikolano’s devotion to Inà. Every year, millions of devotees gather in Naga to celebrate her feast. But beyond the grand celebrations of the city, in small and often overlooked communities, Inà is also loved, honored, and celebrated.

Today, I had the great honor of being part of the Peñafrancia celebration in Barangay Obo, San Miguel, Catanduanes. Here, there were no grand boats or elaborate processions. There was a simple balsa, labored over by men and women, carried and guided through the river by the strength of bayanihan. Every push, every hand that held the raft steady, and every careful movement through the shallow and at times deep parts of the river became a testament to a people’s love and devotion to Inà.

But for me, there is a deeper story behind this celebration. We are here because this community was greatly affected by Typhoon Uwan last year. We met the people brokenhearted and struggling. The same river that carried Inà today once overflowed and caused devastating floods, isolating the village for weeks and destroying farmlands that many families depended on for their livelihood.

However, today, the river once again tells a different story. What was once a source of fear and loss has become a path of devotion and hope. The same waters that brought destruction now carry the image of Inà, accompanied by a community that continues to rise, rebuild, and celebrate life together.

Perhaps this is what Peñafrancia means beyond Naga: a faith that does not remain in the grand procession, but finds its way into the rivers, farms, homes, and struggles of ordinary people.

Inà is not only celebrated where millions gather. She is also present in the small communities where faith is carried by tired hands, strong hearts, and enduring spirit .
