We are excited to announce Chidinma Kalu (@chidinmako) as a speaker at SysConf 2026.
Her talk is titled “The Index Is a Bet You Made at Write Time”
When building an inverted index for a search system, several decisions and assumptions are made about the type of queries the system will receive. The system could take a stored document and tokenize it, normalize it, stem it, discard some information it deems irrelevant and perform some other operations to prepare the index. The final index, then, contains a bet about the types of queries users will ask the system.
This is a talk about how indexes encode a prediction, what happens when the predictions are wrong, and how little design changes can lead to rebuilding the index.

Since meeting during TigerBeetle days, and on Discord since, I've been impressed with Haile (@haile_lagi) 's intelligence and passion for dbs/distsys. If you're looking for a developer with potential based out of Nigeria, talk to Haile.

Let's say you have unlimited time and money, do you think it would be possible to medal in an Olympic sport in your lifetime?
(you have to start at 30+ years old with no experience)
Which sport would this be possible?
I had been using Ubuntu for 10 years.
Last year, I applied to Canonical for a job to develop Ubuntu itself in Rust. Before the interview, they asked me to write a 20-page essay about my life, aspirations, philosophy and whatnot.
Anyway, this is my desktop now.
@shaundai I did! I started out as a front end developer then transitioned to full-stack development. Now, I am a backend developer.
It was a great move. It has made me a better engineer and even more valuable.

Last week I defended my PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. My dissertation foci spanned satellite remote sensing 🛰️, systems engineering, and environmental (in)justice💨 in U.S. prisons. SO MUCH GRATITUDE for all of the support 🙏🏿. Recording of the defense is below ⬇️
Every time you pick being uncomfortable in the short term to invest in your longterm self (like learning something new), you reinforce the ability to make this same investment in the future.
