My coworker resigned and gave the required two weeks’ notice.
Our manager took it personally.
The very next day, he instructed IT to revoke her access to every system because, in his words:
“She’s mentally checked out anyway.”
She tried to explain that she was the only person managing our client billing database and hadn’t completed the handover process.
He didn’t care.
“Someone else will figure it out.”
Friday was her last day.
By Monday morning, dozens of clients were calling.
Invoices hadn’t gone out.
Automatic payments had failed.
Some customers were charged twice, while others weren’t billed at all.
Management spent hours trying to access the billing system before realizing that nobody else had the passwords, documentation, or even understood how the workflows were set up.
My manager kept asking why she hadn’t prepared someone to take over.
She had.
He was the one who cut off her access before she could finish.
By Tuesday, the company was paying an external consultant thousands of dollars just to untangle the mess.
The funniest part?
The consultant’s first recommendation was simple:
“Next time, let employees complete their handover before locking them out.”
