The reason you struggle with design as a beginner is because you're designing for nobody.
You open Figma, stare at the blank canvas, and think, "I'm going to make something cool." Cool for who? Cool, how? Doesn't matter. Just... cool.
Three hours later, you've made another gradient poster with a motivational quote. It gets pushed aside, and you think, "I guess I'm just not good at this yet."
No. You're good enough. You're just designing in a vacuum.
Design isn't about making things pretty. It's about making things work for someone specific.
I spent five days making an elaborate social media design. Shadows, layers, textures, the whole thing. Showed them to my client who runs a school, and she said ,...okay, but this doesn't even look like us.
I had designed something impressive that was completely useless.
The second mistake: thinking you need permission to steal.
Beginners look at good design like it's sacred and untouchable. You see a clean newsletter layout, think, "Wow, they're so talented," and move on.
Wrong. Reverse-engineer it. Why did they put the logo there? Why is the spacing so generous? You're not copying, you're learning the language.
My truth is. most beginner design sucks because the idea sucks, not the execution.
You can have perfect kerning and gorgeous colors, but if you're designing "another coffee shop logo with a minimalist cup icon," it's going to feel flat. Ten thousand people already did that this week.
The design gets better when the constraint gets better. "Make a logo for a coffee shop run by a former librarian who only serves books alongside drinks", now you can make something weird.
One more thing: you're going to make bad work for longer than you think.
Not "charmingly rough" bad. Genuinely ,why did I think this looked good? " Bad. And that's fine. That's necessary.
I look at stuff I made six months ago and want to delete my account. That's not impostor syndrome, that's growth.
Stop designing for "inspiration." Start designing for your friend's startup, your cousin's perfume oil brand, the imaginary club you invented at 1am.
Give yourself a problem to solve, not just a canvas to fill.
The skills will come. But the thinking has to come first.
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS! ARGENTINA ONCE DOWN 0-2 HAVE TURNED IT ALL AROUND TO GO UP 3-2!
