There is no BRICS currency.....yet
None will happen to replace the USD as a reserve currency as long as the Gulf States use the USD as the basis for accounting and transactions when they sell crude oil and gas. Everyone on earth uses crude oil and gas
So why cant the Saudi accept Yuan? well they do but Saudi has reserves of $444b, how much Yuan is out there? Also where will the Yuan be kept? and who will defend the acceptability of the Yuan?
Lets also talk about China, as the world second largest exporter after the US, China has about $3t in reserves, China cant replace its Yuan with BRICS as its akin to backing its own currency, which will strengthen the Yuan making Chinese exports more expensive
However any BRIC currency will hit the dollar central bank reserve holdings in emerging nations. If Nigeria holds BRICS currency, it can simply import from Russia or UAE and that currency will be swapped and settled via a BRICS central bank. so for transactions among BRICS member. No need for dollars.
However Nigeria still has to earn BRIC currency via exports or borrow, same as the USD
So its back to square one for Nigeria
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me
