Osun: While celebrating, let us also remember those who paid the ultimate price for democracy

Once again, I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke and the good people of Osun State on the outcome of the election and, more importantly, on safeguarding the democratic process. The people have spoken through the ballot, reaffirming the fundamental principle that power belongs to the people.

As we celebrate this success, let's not forget those who made the supreme sacrifice for our democracy during the Osun election. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives under different circumstances during the electoral period. I believe these families deserve our collective compassion, solidarity, and support. I therefore hope that the families of those who lost their loved ones will be identified and reached through visits, condolences, and appropriate compensation, irrespective of the political side to which they belonged.

Elections should be about the people, their choices, and their aspirations — not about the loss of precious lives. No political victory is worth the blood of a Nigerian.

My prayer is that our democracy will continue to mature to a point where elections no longer come at the cost of human lives, and where political differences can always be settled through issue-based campaigns and the rule of law.

May God comfort all the families who have lost loved ones and grant the departed eternal rest.

We travelled to Kogi today, and I honestly still cannot believe that a state can be in such a deteriorating condition in 2026. I simply don’t want to believe what I saw.

Some of the schools we visited had no roofs, no chairs, no tables and barely any basic infrastructure. The roads were terrible, electricity was a major issue, and the general state of things was deeply distressing.

And yet, money is allocated to the state every single month. So, where is the governance? Where is the accountability? What exactly are the leaders doing with the resources entrusted to them?

What I saw today has left me broken. Our leaders have no business being this comfortable while the people they were elected to serve are left without basic necessities. There is no excuse for this level of neglect and gross mismanagement in 2026.

Nigeria deserves better. Kogi deserves better. And Nigerians must demand for good governance.

Rehabilitate Existing Infrastructure Before Embarking on New Projects

I have consistently advised governments at all levels to prioritise rehabilitating existing infrastructure before embarking on new projects that may also end up abandoned or left unfinished. For expressing this position, I have often been criticised and called all sorts of names. Yet, it remains the most responsible approach to governance.

It is therefore noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu has now cautioned state governors against committing scarce public resources to constructing unnecessary flyovers in areas with little traffic while neglecting more pressing developmental needs.

The President is, in essence, saying what I have always maintained: government must prioritise projects that directly address the immediate needs of the people. I hope those ministers, officials, and supporters who have consistently attacked this position will now direct the same criticism at him.

However, this admonition must also apply to the Federal Government. There are several unrealistic and white-elephant projects being pursued by the current administration, even as much of our critical infrastructure remains in a state of disrepair. Given our present fiscal realities, priority should be given to rehabilitating and completing existing infrastructure rather than embarking on expensive new projects with limited immediate impact.

Across Nigeria, many of our major highways linking commercial centres and food-producing communities have deteriorated into death traps. Neglecting these critical roads while pursuing prestige projects is neither economically prudent nor people-centred.

This philosophy guided my administration as Governor of Anambra State. I prioritised completing viable projects initiated by my predecessors before embarking on new ones. Government is a continuum, and development should never be measured by who starts a project, but by whether it is completed and serves the people.

Leadership is about making the right choices: fixing what is broken, completing what has already been started, and investing limited public resources where they will have the greatest impact on the greatest number of people.

Hunger and the Insensitivity of Mr. President

I watched with deep concern the statement made by President Bola Tinubu to the Catholic Bishops who visited his office, that there has always been hunger in Nigeria, even before he was born.

While it is true that hunger has been a part of human life and has existed in our country for decades, such a statement appears insensitive to the plight of the millions of Nigerians who face worsening economic hardship today. More importantly, we must focus on the facts and the measurable outcomes of governance.

Before the present administration assumed office in 2023, an estimated 17 million Nigerians were facing acute food insecurity, primarily caused by insecurity, armed conflict, widespread banditry, and devastating floods. Today, less than three years later, that number has risen to about 35 million Nigerians. Instead of improving the situation, the crisis has worsened significantly under the current administration.

The same trend is evident in poverty. Before this government took office in 2023, Nigeria’s extreme poverty was estimated at 87 million people. Current projections suggest that this number is approaching 140 million people, making Nigeria home to the largest population of people living in extreme poverty anywhere in the world.

No one disputes that this administration inherited serious challenges. However, leadership is measured not by the challenges inherited but by the results achieved. The government must honestly acknowledge that its response has fallen far short of what the situation demanded, with millions more Nigerians pushed deeper into poverty and hunger.

The combination of persistent insecurity, poor economic management, fiscal indiscipline, wasteful public expenditure, and inadequate investment in productive sectors has compounded the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

A responsible government must prioritise investment in education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and small businesses while pursuing policies that create jobs, expand production, and lift people out of poverty. That remains my commitment to the Nigerian people.

Earlier today, I met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Dr Richard Montgomery. We had a thoughtful discussion on the state of our democracy, the economy, the importance of strengthening our institutions, and the need to ensure that our elections remain free, fair, credible, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.

As Dr Montgomery prepares to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month, I thanked him for his service and for the role he has played in strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. His time in Nigeria has been marked by constructive engagement and support for our democratic and economic development.

I wished him well as he prepares for his next assignment and thanked him for the friendship and cooperation he has extended to Nigeria throughout his tenure. I look forward to seeing the strong relationship between our two countries continue to grow.

Why the voter registration exercise should be extended.

As we continue to encourage Nigerians to participate actively in our democracy, I respectfully appeal to INEC to consider extending the voter registration window to the latest practical date that still allows adequate time for the preparation of a credible voters’ register before the 2027 general elections.

Every day, more young Nigerians attain the age of 18 and become constitutionally eligible to vote. They are not just our future; they are stakeholders in our present. It would be unfortunate if many of them were denied the opportunity to exercise their civic responsibility simply because the registration process closed long before the elections.

Moreover, this position is legally supported by the High Court judgment delivered on 22 November 2022 in Anaja Salmat & 3 Others v. INEC (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1342/2022). In that decision, the Federal High Court held that voter registration should continue until 90 days before a general election to protect the constitutional voting rights of eligible Nigerians.

I appreciate the enormous responsibility placed on INEC to deliver free, fair, and credible elections. I also recognise the need for sufficient time to clean the register and make the necessary logistical preparations. However, our electoral process should, as much as possible, maximise participation rather than limit it.

A democracy is strengthened when every eligible citizen has the opportunity to be heard. I therefore urge INEC to adopt a registration timeline that protects the integrity of the process while ensuring that no eligible Nigerian, especially our young people, is unnecessarily disenfranchised. -PO

2026 budget: Tinubu's government now synonymous with fraud, corruption, Timi Frank alleges

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has launched a fresh attack on President Bola Tinubu's administration, alleging that the controversy surrounding the 2026 Federal Budget has further entrenched what he described as a government "synonymous with fraud and corruption."

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, Frank said allegations of inflated budgetary provisions, fictitious projects and questionable expenditures had reinforced public concerns over transparency, accountability and the management of public resources under the current administration.

He argued that the recurring controversies over government spending had continued to erode public confidence in the administration, insisting that Nigerians were increasingly losing faith in the integrity of those entrusted with public office.

According to him, rather than strengthening accountability and ensuring that public officials implicated in corruption face justice, the administration had allegedly created an atmosphere in which corrupt practices thrive.

Frank said: "The recent revelations and controversy surrounding the 2026 Federal Budget have further reinforced the widespread perception that this administration represents one of the most troubling governments in Nigeria's recent history."

He added: "Allegations of inflated budgetary allocations, fictitious projects and questionable expenditures have once again raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability and the stewardship of public resources."

The political activist alleged that the Tinubu administration had become identified with repeated claims of financial misconduct and poor governance.

"These developments appear to reinforce a pattern in which your administration has become associated with allegations of financial misconduct and questionable governance.

“The recurring controversies surrounding government expenditures have continued to erode public confidence in your leadership and in the integrity of those serving within your administration," he said.

Frank further accused the administration of failing to enforce accountability by allegedly shielding public officials accused of corruption.

"Rather than strengthening oversight and punishing wrongdoing, your administration is perceived as shielding individuals accused of corruption, thereby creating an environment where public officials believe they can misuse public funds without consequence," he stated.

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, also criticised the 10th National Assembly, accusing it of abandoning its constitutional responsibility of providing effective oversight of the Executive.

He specifically faulted the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, claiming the legislature had failed to act as an independent arm of government.

"Rather than serving as an independent institution responsible for holding the Executive accountable, the National Assembly is widely viewed as having abandoned its constitutional responsibility by acting in a manner that appears overly accommodating to the Executive. Such perceptions weaken democratic institutions and undermine the principles upon which constitutional governance is founded," Frank said.

He urged the international community to exercise caution in extending further loans, grants or development assistance to Nigeria, alleging that there were growing concerns about the management of public funds.

Frank also welcomed ongoing discussions in the United States Congress on reviewing assistance to Nigeria, calling on development partners to subject any future financial support to stricter transparency, accountability and monitoring
