I have launched #TheBigFuture survey, for all children in England to tell me what it’s like to be a child today - changes they want to see in their communities, their biggest concerns & future hopes.
Children and young people can take part here👇 https://t.co/v2x6UNp0f9
This week, I sat with primary-aged children across different schools in Birmingham. A child, when asked about improving her area, told me all about how they were concerned about the state of Birmingham’s refuse collection.
Another child chimed in: ‘Well, my Dad’s been on strike.’ These are the sort of opposing views that we worry about causing strife or friction in children’s lives. But they rose to this conversation magnificently. They discussed their perspectives. The conversation continued. 👇🏻

I spent the first part of this week in Birmingham for my latest stop on #TheBigFuture roadshow across England.

Next week I'm in Nottingham and Leicester!
Children are clear with me - they are sceptical about a ban, but are crying out for action on online harms. I'm calling for all online services with harmful features to be barred for under-18s until they prove they protect children’s safety and wellbeing.

Grateful to @LDBSSchools for having me to their Wisdom in a Wired World conference today to talk about how children feel growing up in the shadow of the online world - from freedom to loneliness & everything in between. Good to see my former Y7 pupil Imran from Stepney in 1994 and now an Assistant Head at the same school 🧡🧡👇🏻
🗣️ "No parent should feel so hopeless. No child should be written off. It is time for change."

My data shows more than 1,000 children spent over a year in hospital. The @MediCinema at Birmingham Children’s Hospital brings joy, normality and a chance to be with family and friends. It was the perfect spot to hear from children about health and care for #TheBigFuture survey.
Always a privilege to meet the children receiving treatment @Bham_Childrens and the fantastic nurses and professionals caring for them. Today it was good to speak with Maya and Bilal who have had long stays and a whole life time of visits every two months about their experiences 🧡
I was inspired by young people at Birmingham Children’s Hospital @Bham_Childrens today. It’s important to me that voices of young people in hospital are part of #TheBigFuture survey. Thanks to the devoted hospital team for hosting us. Link to survey…

A great discussion with young people from Nishkam School Trust. They are full of ideas on how to make Birmingham a better place - and politicians need to listen. I want children across England to add their voice through #TheBigFuture survey.

‘Where do you stand on the ban on social media?’- @TrevorPTweets
Children's Commissioner for England @Rachel_deSouza tells Sky’s Trevor Phillips that she would go further and put 'a ban and restriction on services that are unsuitable for under-18s'.

NEETs crisis, keeping kids safe online, young victims, youth justice - childhood is under pressure. It’s vital we listen to young people. That’s why I want a million children to do my #TheBigFuture survey. I shared what I’ve heard so far with @TrevorPTweets@SkyNews.
'Young people are not concerned about the same things as Westminster'
Children's Commissioner Rachel de Souza says that the youth are more concerned about friendships, money, jobs, and school, rather than AI and immigration

‘From the friendships formed in corridors, to the quiet conversations between a child & a trusted adult, to the 1000 small moments of feeling part of something greater than oneself. It is this that accumulates over years into character, into something at their core that a child will carry with them for life.’ - read about what I saw & heard from the children in Preston, Blackburn & Darwen #TheBigFuture 👇🏻
