In November 2009, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua left Nigeria for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. Weeks passed. The President remained abroad, and presidential powers had not been formally transferred to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan.

At first, Bola Ahmed Tinubu believed calls for Yar’Adua to resign or hand over power were premature.

But as the absence dragged on, Tinubu changed his position.

On 19 January 2010, he called on Yar’Adua to hand over presidential powers to Jonathan.

His words were powerful:

“The implication of the president's indecision and long absence is that the country is now drifting and groping in the dark, like a ship without a captain, in a stormy ocean.”

Tinubu said the situation had moved beyond ordinary politics into a “constitutional crisis” and warned about a “leaderless political order.”

His argument was simple: Nigeria was bigger than one man.

He called on Yar’Adua to put “the nation's interest above self” and transfer authority to Jonathan.

Barely three weeks later, on 9 February 2010, the National Assembly invoked the Doctrine of Necessity and recognised Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President.

History has a wicked sense of humour.

Because sometimes, the strongest arguments against those in power are not the words of their opponents.

They are their own words from the days when somebody else was in power.

And history keeps receipts.
