In 1974, D&D came out. I played it with my friends, and after a while other roleplaying games came out - Empire of the Petal Throne, Traveller, Chivalry & Sorcery, The Fantasy Trip, Boot Hill, and so forth. Typically we'd try out the new kid on the block and so for a few months we'd be playing about 50-50 D&D and the new game. After a while the new game slipped away, and we were back to D&D.
In 1978, RuneQuest appeared, and of course we wanted to try it, too. So again, at first we were doing D&D & RQ 50-50, but after a few months, we were ONLY playing RQ, and I never really went back to D&D except the occasional pick-up game.
Why? Well I'd like to talk about two reasons RuneQuest was better for roleplaying than D&D. And trust me, NONE of the reasons I'm going to mention are because it's more "realistic" or because it has a "better world". Any nitpicking about "realism" will lead to endless back-and-forths. And obviously someone can (theoretically) create a D&D world as good as Glorantha, given time. Heck, before RuneQuest came out, I was running D&D on a map of Glorantha (from a Chaosium board game), so I know it can be done.
