Thank you my brother, @PresidencyZA Cyril Rhamaposa, for your strong address at #WHA78, and for #SouthAfrica's steady co-leadership of the #PandemicAccord negotiations.
Together, for a healthier, safer, fairer Africa and the world!
With @WHO's support, @MinofHealthUG has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts.
This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease.
This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank @Makerere University and @UVRIug for their leadership, as well as @AfricaCDC, @CEPIvaccines, @EC_HERA and @IDRC_CRDI for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort.
WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.

Vaccines are among the most powerful innovations in history. In Africa, vaccines have saved over 50M lives in the past 50 years, but many children are still unvaccinated.
There’s a need for substantial investments by govts & partners to protect children from preventable diseases.
While there is a high-level political commitment to eliminate this disease, this must be translated into concrete actions to cut costs & increase access to the tools we know will help accelerate our efforts to change this tragic situation.
Globally, a woman dies of cervical cancer every 2 minutes. Africa accounts for 23% of the deaths. I must reiterate what we all know: we can completely prevent cervical cancer through vaccination & screening. The major barriers are cost & access.

If #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) gets out of control, we’ll run out of treatment options. 💊
#AMR is largely driven by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials.
We must use medication responsibly to prevent #AMR.
Disinformation erodes trust in public health & puts lives in danger. I welcome @MinofHealthUG's statement debunking misleading claims on vaccines & health issues.
Let's all promote access to credible information for better health decisions.
