@SlimmytiNY It’s not classism oo
It’s based on the schools syllabus similarities to that of ICAN.
It’s not even just private uni, some federal, state universities and even polytechnic has this accreditation.
I know UNIBEN has it.
I wish Nigeria education system can operate like UK system for accountants.
Once you are done with secondary school, start your ATS program.
Look for companies that takes apprenticeship and learn on the job while studying.
Use your AAT certificate to work in bookkeeping roles, account assistant, finance assistant etc
You might be lucky to get promoted to an accountant role if you are good.
Then afterwards, pursue your ICAEW or ACCA to be a qualified accountant.
This will erase spending 4years in school to study accounting.
The other perspective I’ve got on this 👇
I was scrolling through Reddit one day and I saw CFA charter holders having some conversations around the fact that the Institute may be diluting the reputation of the charter because they relaxed the rules around who can write the exams.
They felt that because more people can now write, I think especially students, have more time to prep for the exams compared to maybe corporate workers who would have highly demanding jobs. Therefore, more younger people were becoming charter holders compared to those who already have the industry experience and all.
They also talked about the fact that the more people had access to the Charter, the more accessible it is, the less the reputation and the elitism of the Charter. Everybody was just concerned about that.
I mean, that makes a lot of sense, because if you stand back and think about professional bodies, the reason why people choose to do them is to elevate their chances in the market and be seen as reputable in most cases. Whenever they feel that that is threatened, there is a chance that they may start having those conversations.
Now, I think ICAN may need to take a couple of steps back, go back to the drawing board, and maybe think about how to continue to make sure that the reputation index is not impacted.
That doesn't necessarily mean that they will stop a particular set of people from writing the exams. They may just need to think about accessibility to the program in which case maybe how tough the exam is, point of entry, etc.
But when it comes to a time when almost every single person in a field is a member of an institute, it is not as valuable because it is then the bare minimum expected. There is no real value to the holders of the charter. Maybe something ICAN can absolutely think about.
Petition to restrict ICAN to only people with accounting/finance background!
Why is an engineer writing ICAN?
Why is a Medical doctor writing ICAN?
Why is a lawyer able to write ICAN and I can’t go to Law school as a Chartered Accountant?
ICAN is for FINANCE PROFESSIONALS!
a very greedy professional body in my own opinion
non law students can’t write bar exams
non medical students can’t write mbbs exams
non nursing students can’t write RN exams
only ICAN that opened theirs to everyone
rubbish.
