I had been preparing for the Riri Exhibition, which was scheduled to be held next May, while discussing the details closely with Riri-san. However, upon hearing the news of her passing, I was left with a deep hole in my heart.
For the previous Riri Exhibition, we created a photo book compiling a year’s worth of her walking photos. This time, we had been discussing making another volume covering “the period from the last exhibition up to the next,” and Riri-san had been very much looking forward to that idea.
We had planned to include photos taken up until next spring, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave the project unfinished. Therefore, I have compiled the photographs taken from spring 2023 up to the final shoot on October 4 into a single digital photo book. In fact, the editing up through September had already been completed.
For the cover, I chose one photograph that I had hoped to exhibit. Since I began working with black-and-white film this summer, I had also planned to include monochrome film works in this exhibition as a new experiment.
This photo book is, for me, one way to come to terms with my feelings. As I turned the final pages, I did so while remembering the time I spent with Riri-san. I hope this work can gently embrace those unfinished moments, even just a little.
The link to the digital photo book is in the reply to this post. I would be grateful if you could take a moment to look through Riri-san’s two-year record when you have the time.
