Having hired over 100 traders in my 25 year career in the industry, I can attest to what Ken says on this. The athletes significantly outperformed the MIT, Ivy, “savants”. And they definitely outperformed the Phds.
Ken Griffin on the single factor he looks for when hiring at Citadel:
"show me an athlete who did well academically."
"an athlete because they know what it takes to win and they've had to experience loss."
talent is everywhere. what's rare is someone who knows how to lose, recover, and still perform at a high level.
same thing separates profitable traders from everyone else.
This is the foundation of my coaching philosophy. As Director of one of the largest girls programs in IL, I truly believe this approach has helped our coaches achieve very positive reviews.
“Parents aren’t the problem. Confusion is.”
Sometimes in youth sports, parents get an unfair bad rap. As a youth hockey association, if you aren’t consistently communicating with your parents on expectations, standards, and culture, you’re opening yourself up to dissent and parent pushback. The more you proactively communicate, the fewer fires you’ll have to put out during the year.
I brought my Hockey Think Tank team onto this week’s podcast to talk about the five biggest things we learned this year in youth hockey.
🌟 Senior Spotlight | Meet Mia, one of the original players who started in the girls program, and has been a pivotal player for each of her years here. Her favorite hockey memory is winning the Triple Crown in her U14 season and going to Nationals.

🏆 Congratulations to our 12U Girls for winning the @premiericeprospects CCM World Invite!! With tough competition these girls were all smiles as the final buzzer sounded. Shoutout to Mia for winning tournament MVP! Way to go ladies! 🥇#BeAHawk
For all the hockey parents out there I want to take a second and provide a little bit of perspective on a hockey director's role.
So many hockey directors, when they get into that position, they go into it as a hockey person thinking a lot of their job is actually “directing hockey.”
But they find out pretty quickly that the hockey part is a small, minuscule part of their job. They figure out that most of what they do is administrative, putting out fires, and dealing with unhappy parents.
They don't get to do what they love which is teaching hockey to the coaches and to the players.
It’s a job that is so undervalued, often times understaffed, and catches the flack whenever anything goes wrong whether it was their fault or not.
So if you have a minute, send a note of appreciation to your kid’s hockey director. There’s a pretty good chance they are stressed but doing the best job they can to provide positive value to your kid and your family.
I guarantee you that will go a long way.
Hockey Parents:
It's that time of year where everybody's jostling for positioning…
Everybody's trying to figure out where everybody's going next year. And the question that I get asked the most at this time of year is…WHAT TEAM SHOULD MY SON OR DAUGHTER PLAY FOR NEXT YEAR??
There's a lot of different factors that go into it, but the most important factor is…WHO IS THE COACH?
The coach is going to be the person that's going to have the most impact on them both in their hockey development on the ice and in their personal development off the ice.
Ask a lot of questions to that coach about their coaching philosophies. Talk to as many people as you can that have played for that coach previously about their experience.
If you can, hop on a live barn and watch a practice as that is where players get better. Iff they run a great practice, your kid is going to develop.
So…who is the coach?
That's the most important question to ask at this time of year as you are trying to find the right team for your kid to play.
After a long, long weekend of extra OT periods with Warhawks, a 0-3 comeback loss 2-3 against Glenview and a 4-0 win today against Leafs, 16U Girls are heading to the State Championship Game on March 9th!! 🏆 Great job girls!! #BeAHawk
I mean, all that matters is you have ESOS on the list. Don’t know why it took everyone so long to realize that is BY FAR the best song on August album. Was bummed it wasn’t on Franklin set list. https://t.co/EvdX7AO456
I’m the Girls Director at a program in Chicago and after 3 years of coaching the girls (now on year 9) I came to basically the same conclusion. Put your kid 1. In the environment that makes them want to be at the rink and 2. With the best coach.
Here are a few messages from a great D1 coach out east. It’s tough how often people listen to profit driven entities rather than experts in the field trying to do the right thing. For all the people struggling with this, hopefully these messages can provide perspective.
