Please hear me out before you throw that punch.

My experience in politics so far has given me deeper perspectives about the problems we face. We spend a great deal of time blaming politicians, and many deserve every criticism they receive. But we must also ask ourselves a difficult question: can a political system succeed when millions of citizens do not understand how power works? I do not believe it can.

Too many Nigerians have been conditioned to believe they are powerless. We hear it every day: "Nothing will change." "Our votes don't count." "They're all the same." Once people begin to think this way, they surrender the most powerful weapon they possess, which is their voice. A people who believe they are powerless eventually become powerless.

Politics is not something that happens only in Abuja. It determines whether your child attends a good school, whether your hospital has medicine, whether your business has electricity, and whether your community has roads and security. Those who ignore politics do not escape its consequences, they simply allow others to make decisions on their behalf.

The consequence of not being involved, as we can see, is a political environment where those who are loudest, most disruptive, or best funded often dominate public space. When civic knowledge is low, misinformation spreads easily, political manipulation flourishes, and violence becomes an effective political tool. Hooliganism finds fertile ground where informed citizenship is weak. Democracy was never designed to function on ignorance or intimidation, it depends on citizens who ask questions, demand evidence, scrutinize policies, and refuse to be bought or bullied.

Western-style representative democracy that Nigeria borrowed assumes a politically aware population capable of making informed choices and defending democratic institutions. Elections alone do not make a democracy. Ballot boxes, political parties, and constitutions are only as strong as the people who use them. Perhaps our greatest failure is that civic education has almost disappeared. We teach people how to pass examinations, but not necessarily how to hold public officials accountable. Many citizens do not fully understand what each level of government is responsible for, yet we expect democracy to flourish.

The solution is not simply to elect better leaders. Better leaders matter, but they are not enough. We also need better-informed citizens, people who read, ask questions, challenge falsehoods, organize peacefully, and understand that politics is not a spectator sport.

The day the average Nigerian becomes informed, engaged, and impossible to deceive is the day our politics will begin to change. Vote buying will become less effective, hooliganism will lose its market, and public office will once again become a place of service rather than exploitation.

The future of Nigeria will not be decided only by those who govern. It will be decided by whether those who are governed finally realize that power has always belonged to them.
