BALCO wins the race for Karlapat Bauxite! ⛏️

Vedanta Group company Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (BALCO) has emerged as the Preferred Bidder for the Karlapat Bauxite Block in Kalahandi, Odisha, reportedly quoting a massive 175% premium.

The block is reported to hold around 248 million tonnes of bauxite resources, making it a major mineral asset with strategic importance for the aluminium industry.

But beyond the auction, several critical questions remain:

🌳 What will be the impact on forest land and biodiversity?
💧 What happens to local water sources?
🧑🏽‍🌾 How will tribal and forest rights be protected?
🏘️ What role will Gram Sabhas play?
💰 How much will local communities actually benefit from the huge mineral wealth?

The auction may be over, but mining cannot simply begin overnight. Environmental clearances, forest-related approvals, mining plans, rehabilitation and other statutory processes still have to be completed.

Karlapat is not just about bauxite beneath the hills. It is also about the forests, water, land, livelihoods and rights of the people living there.

The real question is: Who will benefit from Karlapat—and at what cost?

🚨 Urgent Forest & Wildlife Protection Concern in Kalahandi

Repeated elephant deaths in the Kalahandi North Forest Division, including the death of a juvenile elephant, raise serious questions about wildlife protection, forest management and enforcement.

If reports of illegal felling, forest degradation, plantation-related irregularities and the activities of forest mafias in both Kalahandi North and South Forest Divisions are found to be true, the matter demands immediate, impartial and high-level investigation.

The reported activities around Gadimoda and adjoining forest areas also require strict verification and enforcement action. Failure to control organised forest offences could further accelerate forest loss and put elephants and other wildlife at greater risk.

I urge the authorities to conduct a time-bound, independent investigation into:
• Repeated elephant deaths
• Illegal tree felling and timber smuggling
• Forest encroachment and degradation
• Plantation/afforestation expenditure and ground-level implementation
• Wildlife protection and patrolling mechanisms
• Possible involvement of organised forest offenders

The forests of Kalahandi are a vital ecological asset. Wildlife protection cannot be compromised.
