🇦🇶Amazing news from the #EU#HorizonEU#Climate funded @OldestIce❗️ 👏👏
🌐The project's international team of scientists has successfully drilled to the bedrock
🧊These ice samples are expected to unveil critical details about our earth's climate history

Following the extraction of the first core of the season, 3.59 m of excellent ice quality, the drilling continued, passing the depth of 1900 m and reaching 1947 m today. The team celebrated with a cake freshly baked by Danilo!

What happens in the poles, doesn't stay in the poles.
Ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica has increased fivefold since the 1990s, now accounting for a quarter of sea-level rise.
Between 1992 and 2020, the polar ice sheets lost 7560 billion tonnes of ice – equivalent to an ice cube measuring 20 km each side.
Melting of the polar ice sheets has caused a 21 mm rise in global sea level since 1992.

🟢⚪️🔴
🥰 Beautiful and nearly cloudless image of #Italy and the #Alps acquired yesterday, 18 December by #Sentinel3 🇪🇺🛰️
🗻 [2023 retrospective] In October, we successfully extracted from the endangered Colle del Lys glacier in the Alps!
🙌 2 ice cores drilled for #research and 1 preserved for #Heritage.

“This season has been intense but brought amazing results thanks to the team’s gigantic efforts:
they worked tirelessly for two months at the Little Dome C camp"
@CarloBarbante used this words to describe the successful 22/23 drilling campaign just concluded!
We have completed the last day of drilling operations✨
We can consider the 22/23 drilling season concluded, but there is still a lot of work at LDC: the closure of the camp is always a long process and will take a few days.
Which will be the depth reached for this season?😏
