T.O.P — Q&A with MELON Interview

Q5. You collaborated on the visuals with Ed Ruscha, the Squid Game production team, and Nana.

TOP: In the case of Ed Ruscha, he’s an artist I’ve admired and looked up to since I was young. Just like this album is part of [TOP SPOT - Multi-Perspective (ANOTHER DIMENSION)], I plan to continue presenting the TOP SPOT series to you over the coming years. I’ve actually been thinking about this for around 10 years—so back in 2016, I went to the U.S. and met Ed Ruscha in person. I remember telling him that it was my dream to create a long, epic album series and asking if he would be willing to create the album cover. As you can see, the artwork was completed in 2019. I’ve cherished it for a long time, and I really wanted to finally share it with my fans. It’s an album cover that I feel deeply honored to have.

As for the music videos, I worked with cinematographer Kim Ji-yong, whom I collaborated with through Squid Game. He took on the role of overall director for several of the music videos. In addition, art director Chae Kyung-sun, who also worked on Squid Game, led the art and set design. Thanks to them, the same filming and art teams from Squid Game came together again, which made this collaboration incredibly meaningful and special for me. It was a truly joyful and fulfilling experience.
Chae Kyung-sun also served as the art director for the physical album, organizing it into three themes—multi-perspective, another dimension, and expanded consciousness—and visualizing all the artwork to build a large, cohesive universe. Working alongside these incredible senior artists whom I’ve always admired and respected allowed me to grow a lot and feel like I’ve reached another level. It was a very valuable experience for me.

As for Nana, after creating the track “Totally Crazy! (Studio54)”, I felt that it needed a female character and wondered who would suit it best. She was the first person who came to mind—someone whose personality and dance style would match the song perfectly. When you watch the music video, I think you’ll really feel her charm and even discover a new side of her. I’m very grateful for how well she brought that to life.

The music video turned out so well that I haven’t released it yet—though that might sound misleading. I just felt that people should have some time to first listen to and enjoy the music as it is. And then, at some point, I’m excitedly anticipating the moment when the “Totally Crazy! (Studio54)” music video will finally be revealed.
