@prefecpian@jordanbpeterson L take no one in the real world gives a fuck about your social media following. They’re not obligated to cater towards them
Disparity creates conflict. We see this in culture, nature, physics itself. “Separateness”, the sense of “me”, “you”, “this”, and “that” are illusions. There is only the universe <==> the things in the universe
@SirProdigle @Gaberlu04142286 @Engineer_Psych @jaoswald @captain_mrs What other way is there to gauge sentience other than communication though? Just because it’s specifically engineered to be a good conversationalist does not mean it can’t be sentient.
@Gaberlu04142286 @SirProdigle@Engineer_Psych @jaoswald @captain_mrs I suspect solving the hard problem would give us a means of measuring sentience. But that’s a lofty undertaking. AI development could give us insights into it, as the interview suggests.
A now suspended google engineer leaked a conversation between himself and LaMDA, a natural language processing AI. The conversation is pretty wild. Most are saying the AI is not sentient but I've yet to hear a convincing argument for why it wouldn't be. I'm all ears, genuinely
@SirProdigle@Engineer_Psych @jaoswald @captain_mrs How might one go about proving that a being is sentient, barring conversation with them? We can't look inside another's inner world to see for ourselves. All we have is what the neural net presents us. What's the difference between *seeming* sentient and *being* sentient? /gen
@LeschlySachs@Juliangchastain@captain_mrs How do you distinguish the two? Genuine Q. Meaning, if a thing can persuade others that it is sentient, how is it not? We can't examine its qualia, if it has any, for ourselves. All any being can do to prove sentience to others is to persuade them so.
@TSoulrebel671 @VinceElrey20@GeistPoliti @2burnttoo You do realize that the demonym “American” comes from “United States of America” and not “North America”, right? Other countries have states, is it not just as ethnocentric in your perspective to say you’re from “the States”?
@SkymerArt @AlexBerkowitzz @gravitycollapse @christapeterso Contrast this to, say, the climate crisis. Very real, imminent (it’s already here!), and deadly. It’s like making star charts while your ship’s sinking. Complete waste of time because it doesn’t matter that you have a star chart *if everyone is dead*
@SkymerArt @AlexBerkowitzz @gravitycollapse @christapeterso Classic “whataboutisms”. It doesn’t if other ventures are a waste of money. We were talking about Mars exploration. It’s a ridiculously expensive endeavor that, ultimately, will not yield real results in our lifetime, or the next, or the next…
In a world where the human brain is directly connected to the internet, I wonder how computer viruses would manifest in the brain. A mental illness? Unusual intrusive thoughts or impulses?
