I wonder if 'my loan is £90k' is the least helpful framing. The damaging part is monthly cash flow. We need to start being honest about the payslip reality across the salary spectrum. Even for high earners, paying around £500 a month towards student loans is clearly excessive

I was told “borrow money to go to university and you can repay what you owe once you start earning enough”.

Not “go to university and later we will feel free to seize as much of your income as we decide to fund the state’s other spending commitments”.

@lynnery38 @linmeitalks Well as someone who went to uni in 2012 (the first year the fee system changed) and has earnt over the threshold for 10+ years, I can tell you I owe more now than I borrowed despite paying a significant amount back. I don’t think the govt is the one getting ripped off here 😂

Not sure why people can’t comprehend how student loan/debt should be treated as a scandal.

Most of us were TOLD at school…. When we were CHILDREN, you’ll get a loan which will have minimal impact on you, don’t worry about it too much, just apply on UCAS and hope for the best.

No one told us about the increase of crippling interest, how it will affect your ability to buy a house and your general take home income, with little hope of paying it off…..

No one thought …. Let’s ensure these financial products are fully understood by these bunch of KIDS who have never even had a credit card or an overdraft in life.

Someone in late 60s earning £30k pays income tax at 20%. That’s all. And they’ll have a c£12k state pension.
