Follow-up to my Xbox Elite 2 / Windows / Steam controller nightmare:
SOLUTION:
Uninstall Xbox Game Bar completely.
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:
Get-AppxPackage XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage
That finally stopped:
- random overlays
- screenshot popups
- Widget Menu
- Controller Bar insanity
- buttons triggering system UI
Absolutely unbelievable that in 2026:
pressing B on a Microsoft controller, on Microsoft Windows, can open three different overlay systems fighting each other.
Modern Microsoft software feels like:
50 middleware teams stacked on top of each other with zero coordination.
I just wanted:
B means B.
Using an Xbox Elite controller to play games on Windows.
Instead I got:
- Steam Overlay
- Steam Recording
- Xbox Game Bar
- Controller Bar
- Compact Mode
- Widget Menu
- Cloud sync conflicts
- Handheld UI
- random screenshot popups
Pressing B opens overlays.
Pressing A opens galleries.
Three different software stacks are fighting over the same controller buttons.
I didn’t enable any of this.
I just wanted:
“B means B.”
Modern software seriously needs a “stop being clever” mode.
