Max Verstappen and his manager, Raymond Vermeulen, met with top Red Bull figures at the company's Salzburg headquarters ahead of the Barcelona GP. According to reports, the discussions covered not only his future with the Austrian team but also the ownership structure of Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has complained about this multiple times. He has even sent a letter to the FIA calling for such ownership structures — in which one owner controls two teams — to be banned. Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies has indicated that the team is willing to take more steps to assure the rest of the grid that they are not gaining unfair advantages from the collaboration.
According to F1 journalist Joe Saward, Verstappen could play a key role in the steps that parent company Red Bull GmbH can take. The Brit writes in The Business of Motorsport that there are some quite creative stories circulating about how Red Bull can secure Verstappen's services at least beyond 2026. One idea is that the group could offer him a controlling interest in Racing Bulls, meaning Red Bull would no longer be the owner of two teams. At the same time, Saward writes that this option is unlikely.
However, it would be a way to keep the Dutchman on board. The idea that Verstappen wants to expand his racing empire is not crazy, as he is already doing so with Verstappen Sim Racing and his own GT3 team, which collaborates with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport in the GT World Challenge Europe and at the Nordschleife. It seems Verstappen remains the key to the 2026 driver market in many ways, until his plans are officially confirmed.
