Dear @narendramodi, a 34-year-old software professional hanged himself to death yesterday. Many do, more than 100,000 did in the first half of last year alone.

Before killing himself, he recorded his final testament in a 1.5-hour clip and shared it with Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Not you, not the authorities, not his friends, not anyone in India, but two men on the other side of the world who have nothing to do with him, his life, or his country.

I can’t speak for him, but fair to assume he had more faith in them taking note, to whatever end, than anyone in his own country? This is not mistrust, this is renouncement. This is a man giving up on us, then giving up on life.

This is a tragedy, but not the only one. BNS 84 (IPC 498A) was meant to protect wives from their husbands. But what protects husbands from their wives? Why is it not gender-neutral? Are men and women different species? Why isn’t the abuse of a law penalized with even remotely comparable severity? To the extent that the abuse has become an attractive gambit?

You may not be directly responsible for any of this, but you are the Prime Minister of this country. You were of this man. Tenth year in a row.

Is a “Viksit Bharat” even possible with such a vicious body of law?

Dear @rahulgandhi, you are the leader of opposition. That’s almost as responsible a position as the Prime Minister himself. A citizen losing faith in this country is also a citizen losing faith in you. The system may be broken, but you are the system! Is it not worth taking up issues for one of India’s most abused pieces of legislation? As per 2020 NCRB numbers, more than 111,000 cases were reported against 498A. Fewer than 4,000 resulted in conviction. That’s a lower conviction rate than charges as grave as terrorism, and by orders of magnitude.

Ironically, the PDV Act of your own government added further teeth to an already draconian law. Isn’t it time it were revisited in a bipartisan spirit? This affects your voters as much as it affects your critics. Why not collaborate with the government and do something about it?

Dear @arjunrammeghwal, a woman asked her husband to kill himself in a courtroom and the presiding judge laughed with her. As lay citizens most of us don’t know exactly what powers you have, if any, over the judiciary. But as Law Minister, you ought to be at the very least aware that the man followed through and shared his dying declaration with two men, neither of them Indian. Perhaps he had no expectations from you?

Only last year the “Honorable” Supreme Court refused to even entertain the idea that men could be victims of laws designed to persecute them exclusively. A plea requesting just framing of guidelines was dismissed as it a taboo was being threatened.

This tweet isn’t in hopes that any of you will respond to it. Or even read it. This is just to register that your doors were knocked.
