Today, Officer Nick Layton (#19468) and his K-9 partner Lincoln graduated from the California Highway Patrol’s Canine Training Class I-2026 after successfully completing an intensive 11-week training program from April 27 through July 10, 2026.

The team is assigned to the Capitol Protection Section’s Hazardous Device Detail (HDD), where they will serve as an explosives detection team helping protect the California State Capitol Complex and the thousands of employees, visitors, and elected officials who visit each year.

Officer Layton, a CHP Academy graduate from May 15, 2009, now begins a new chapter in his career as a K-9 handler. Lincoln is his first K-9 partner, making today’s graduation an especially meaningful milestone.

📢 TRAFFIC BREAKS - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

When a CHP unit weaves across lanes with lights on, we are creating a traffic break to slow or stop traffic for hazards or crashes.

⚠️ Stay back at least 300 feet from any emergency vehicle with lights on. It is required by CVC 21706.

Yesterday, October 9th, the California Highway Patrol joined state partners and community organizations at the Capitol to celebrate inclusion, accessibility, and opportunity during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The California Highway Patrol offers its deepest condolences to Officer Cano’s family, friends, and fellow officers. We honor the legacy of a hero who gave his all in service to others.
