Very excited to introduce Pushpita & Nasir, our first applied mathematicians @chrfbd. They are learning nextgen sequencing so we can work together to best analyze genomics data. To solve public health problems, we MUST work together. Thanks @illumina for supporting the training!
Female labour force participation rate in Bangladesh 🇧🇩 is 42.7% according to the latest Labour Force Survey of 2022. It was 36.3 percent in the last survey (2017). Great progress towards #Gender equality in Labour Force participation.
Exciting new data: Pfizer's experimental RSV vaccine was 82% effective in preventing severe infections in infants when given to women during pregnancy. With FDA approval, this could be the first maternal vaccine to prevent the disease in infants. https://t.co/tQAqk8o3Hc
Genomics is one thing & genomics for public health in resource constrained settings is another.
We are thrilled with the 📈 number of 🌎 applications in 2023! Was a pleasure to host Olivia, U of Minnesota, & Dr. Syafinaz, U Putra Malaysia, as nextgen sequencing trainees @chrfbd!
Our largest hands on science camp yet! The headmaster of a school in rural river island, Haimchar, got together 50 students from 7 schools. From @chrf were 7 instructors, 2 assistants! We stayed at an ex-students house- hospitality was the kindest ever.
Thanks @illumina also!
@richardquest@questCNN Happy for the presence of @richardquest. Thank you! More you come more you will know the progress of this most densely populous country! Cheers. Joy Bangla (জয় বাংলা)।
Thank you #bangladesh for warmth and hospitality. This was my first visit to your country: it won’t be my last. You can see my interview with the prime minister on @questCNN next week
What a special, special yesterday was!!! The 100th intern/trainee graduated from our Building Scientists for Bangladesh program today! And our 1st intern was there too because she already got a job at CHRF and hangs out with us permanently now!
❤ Science is in the air ❤
Back TOGETHER after 8 loooong years! The last (and first) time Yogesh and I were together in Delhi was for our wedding in Dec 2014!
On a vengeance to eat all the chat and golgappas that we haven't in the last 8 years.
What a priviledge to join @ReSViNET this year in Lisbon & share some of the work we have been conducting on the burden of RSV our health system in collaboration with @shoedeepto. Thanks @gatesfoundation for supporting this study.
Much work remains to be done... #rsv#rsvvw23
We conducted enteric fever surveillance @chrfbd for 23 years and found S. Paratyphi A remained susceptible to most older antibiotics, unlike S. Typhi. This data can guide evidence-based policy decisions for empirical treatment of paratyphoid fever.

US colleagues tell me they can buy used/old miseqs for low prices. We want to start #NGS based diagnostics, eg breast cancer screening in 🇧🇩 & offer affordable pricing to all. A #miseq would be super helpful. Anyone willing to donate or sell their miseq from @illumina?
Let’s continue showing young girls that scientists look just like them.
This year, CHRF will be providing scholarships for women to help develop their skills in genomics. Stay tuned for further details!

Fought cancer at 24.
Fighting Crohns disease since 25. Moved to Bangladesh to better use my second chance at life at 29.
But my hardest fight at 36 is "global health"- a field that systematically oppresses the oppressed.
Not giving up. 2nd life anyways. But wish I were a cat.
The best part about research is that you never stop making friends!!
A wonderful evening of stories and science. @bhhorwitz thanks for hosting and inspiring to share 🙏🏾🙏🏾
