If you are looking for what the most Christ-like response is to the social, politcal, and theological issues of our day, it will almost always be found in a peaceful, respectful, and yet bold subversion of majority culture.
I say this with no cynicism:
In the mid-2000’s I enrolled at Southern Seminary mainly bc political rhetoric like this was deemed unfaithful itself. Right wing and Moral Majority movements were said to be spiritually bankrupt. Renewal dynamics were emphasized over political power
Freedom posited as “doing what you want when you want” is not Biblical freedom. Biblical freedom is defined as loving your neighbor as yourself because you have died to yourself.
@NeilShenvi@lecrae@Verniconam@LauraRbnsn@bj116 My question is simply, why not? Haha are the American systems of private property and marriage somehow wholly just? If there are any parts of them (however small) that are unjust, why can’t believers seek to dismantle or reform these parts to make them more equitable? 1/
@NeilShenvi@lecrae@Verniconam@LauraRbnsn@bj116 If we refuse to do so (or at least to try), we must either claim these systems (and thus the racial disparities) are already as they will be in the restoration of all things (which sounds legit awful) or claim we simply prefer the flawed, inequitable systems as they are. 4/
@NeilShenvi@lecrae@Verniconam@LauraRbnsn@bj116 Ultimately, even if we define "systemic racism" as "systems which perpetuate racial disparities," then why shouldn’t the church try to fix those systems WHEREVER they may be found. 3/
Recently, I’ve been reluctant to tweet about America’s current social and political landscape. When I’m honest, that reluctance stems from selfishness, apathy, or cynicism. But I don’t want to let any of those things influence my voice. That said, here are some of my thoughts: 1/
Anyway, I want to go on, but I meant to cover like ten topics by now, and I’ve barely finished one. I hope to continue this later for how I think the imago dei should inform things like affirmative action, wealth distribution, political engagement, foreign relations, etc. 19/
