Character reference sheets for Superman & Spider-Man by Pepe Larraz, the artist for the main story of the Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman crossover issue.
I hated drawing backgrounds when I first started. I met a comic artist named Billy Dallas Patton at a show. He had an amazing double page spread of the entire island of Manhattan. It was fully detailed and rendered. I asked him how he was able to do that. He asking if I liked drawing backgrounds. I said "of course not". He replied "well I do". I completely changed my attitude that day. I started loving backgrounds. Studied photographs for design and structure of buildings until I could draw them out of my imagination. If you reference enough buildings in real life, you can start making them up from your head. Same with cars, trees, landscapes, etc. Just lots of practice and lots of love.
Marvel sketch sheet.
I’ll be at Motor City Comic Con this coming weekend in Detroit. My first time there so come by and say hi and get your books signed!
