Assume goodwill until proven otherwise. Some situations are not what they appear to be at first glance. This is particularly true when supporting students who have experienced trauma. The student in your building at 4 a.m. may not be vandalizing or stealing, they may be homeless, hungry and afraid. Lead with empathy, kindness and compassion first.
