While this incident is obviously tragic, Bloomberg fails to give important context and mention even once that the car was running FSD V11, a much older version of FSD.

With FSD V12, which Tesla introduced in early 2024, Tesla moved to a completely different end-to-end neural net system, a major architectural shift. This results in more human-like, adaptive driving, better generalization across scenarios, and improved reliability by learning holistically from real-world driving data. Tesla has now moved to V13 for cars with hardware version 4.

On average, over 100 people die per day in the U.S. from accidents where humans were manually driving. The goal of FSD is to bring those numbers down, and all data shared by Tesla points to that being the case.

Teslas with FSD (Supervised) engaged have driven about 4 billion miles to date, with over 75% of those miles being on FSD V12 or later, when Tesla switched to its new end-to-end system.

In Q1 2025, Tesla recorded one crash for every 7.44 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2023) shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 702,000 miles.

While any loss of life is tragic, putting the data into context is important. Tesla's FSD is already saving lives, you can see the video evidence directly on X, but the legacy media doesn't cover those stories. The technology will only continue to get better and better.
