Germany can turn itself around if it really understands its issues. We lay it out in our new book "Totally Kaputt?" (out now in German):

@ManagerTactical Can we please be a little more gracious during this tournament. There's already enough ugliness toward other nations by US officials. Can we as fans take the higher ground and show more respect.
Not a good chart for Germany, which needs net migration to maintain its workforce.
Even if this is retirees heading south (instead of active workers moving), it means all that state pension money is going to support other economies.
Good Morning from Germany, where more and more German citizens are leaving the country.
Last year, 288,579 Germans moved abroad, up from 270,000 the year before – a fresh record. The number of Germans moving back to Germany rose slightly, from 189,000 to 192,000. But the net balance still worsened to almost -97,000. That is the 2nd-highest net outflow of German citizens in the country’s history. Only 2016 was worse, at -135,000.
@usmntonly Good. He had little skin in the game and wasn't committed to building the program. His main service was ending the Berhalter era.
Hopefully, we have a decent run, but then it is time for Poch to go.
Get ready for it.
If Germany’s far-right party AfD wins control in Saxony-Anhalt in September, it plans a purge of civil servants that don't align with its nationalist agenda.
Likely a sign of things to come.

Germany's far-right AfD pulls into a 6 point lead ahead of Friedrich Merz's conservatives.
Only about one in three voters support the governing parties. The CDU/CSU-SPD coalition was described as "grand" in the good old days of a few years ago.
After a week of being booed and heckled and struggling to connect with voters and implement forward-looking reforms, Chancellor Merz's conservatives are now trailing the far-right AfD by 7 points.
Der Auftritt von Kanzler Merz (CDU) beim Katholikentag ist von Zwischenrufern gestört worden. Lautstark machten die Demonstranten ihren Unmut über die Politik der Bundesregierung deutlich und hielten Protestplakate hoch.
@ck_gen It does look that way. Hard to see a trend change at this point.
Feels like this fall Merz will be forced aside after state election defeats, and Spahn (or Soeder) takes over as chancellor in a fragile minority government.
In this poll for the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, which votes for a new regional government on Sept. 6, the far-right AfD is almost on par with the three parties above the 5% threshold.
AfD = 42%
CDU+SPD+Left = 43%
The "firewall" against the far-right can't survive that.
@tombogert Gio had one decent sub appearance and scored a garbage time goal. The proper answer is "I need to keep working hard and take every chance I get "
🚨 Another historic move in German football 🇩🇪
Kathleen Krüger, former Bayern women's midfielder, becomes Hamburg's Sporting Director.
The role is traditionally in charge of all men's football activities including hiring or firing coaches and transfers.
👏
Germany's far-right AfD has opened up a six-point lead over Friedrich Merz's conservatives in the latest YouGov poll. The widest so far among major voter surveys.
German Chancellor Merz drew shouts and jeers at a labor union conference as he made a pitch for reforms, again calling for sacrifices (despite rejecting taxes on the wealthy).
“Everybody has to give something,” he said, triggering a chorus of boos.

Mayor Mamdani leads the attack at a Soccer Streets game outside PS 32 in the Bronx. NYC DOT is opening streets to school children outside of their schools with soccer pitches, banner-making stations, and more leading up to the World Cup.
Alice Weidel, the co-leader of Germany's far-right AfD, is the country’s second-most popular politician.
But to be fair, only Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is viewed positively.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has the most negative rating.
@derJamesJackson That's getting close to the level needed for an absolute majority in the state (if other parties fall short of the 5% hurdle).
Feels other worth noting this here...

@Ludovic_Subran It took Milan a long time to realize the error of their ways. In 2023, the mayor told us...
“Sometimes these billionaires do not live the idea of communities. They are happy here. But we would like to have a sort of give-back from them.”

87% of Germans are unhappy with the governing coalition of Friedrich Merz's conservatives and the Social Democrats, according to a Forsa poll.
It's hard to get that many Germans to agree on anything. So I guess that is a form of national solidarity. Immerhin...🙆♂️
