I want to bring a few disparate threads together. To start with, Gloria Steinem's passing—the women's liberation figurehead—definitely changed American society, with so many more women earning college degrees and so many more women in the workforce. In fact, in my research, I found that so much of the women's liberation thesis is connected to wages, labor market efficiency, and economic growth.
Maybe there was a time when we needed a Gloria Steinem to advance gender equality, but I wonder if that version of social change is what we need today. I know that neither JD Vance nor Marco Rubio think it is, because they've just announced a sea change in how we would allocate childhood development funds. Specifically, they are considering a rule change that would enable two-parent households where one parent works to qualify for federal childhood development subsidies. Before, to qualify, both parents had to either be working or training to work.
And it made me think about work. What is work? What kind of work do we value? Do we value a woman's work when it's in the home, or only when it's for a business? Why is that? Is that good for America? Because we know that as both parents work, the food environment in the home degrades. And whether it's the woman or the man who works—when one of them stays home and does meals—far fewer ultra-processed foods are consumed. Kids' mental health outcomes tend to go up, there are fewer diseases, and all sorts of benefits. So, in this video, we're going to address how these concepts merge. #women #news #parents #trump #family
Mitch McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, traveled to China three days after her husband apparently suffered a cardiac event, which has left him hospitalized for more than two weeks. Officially, Elaine Chao holds no position within the US government. Yet, the Chinese Vice President, a very high-ranking official within the Chinese Communist Party, is meeting with her to discuss US-China relations.
In their reporting of the meeting, the People's Daily described Ms. Chao as the former US Transportation Secretary, not Mitch McConnell's wife. Mitch McConnell sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee and chairs the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. In plain English, that means Mitch McConnell is officially the chairperson in the Senate of everything related to US arms, supply chains, and defense technologies. By virtue of his position, he has access to all sorts of classified information.
Mitch McConnell and his office aren't releasing anything about his condition. He hasn't voted on the Senate floor in weeks. According to my research, he's been having pretty serious health problems since at least 2019. But to me, the real story here is his wife and these meetings with the Chinese government. It seems to me like she is very likely forming some type of back-channel diplomatic connection between Mitch McConnell and the Chinese government. Is that something that we Americans should tolerate? Shouldn't we demand to know when people whom we haven't elected are conducting sensitive foreign business with foreign powers, or is this just the way that it works?
Shout out to @Cheering4Change / Desirée Townsend for her great reporting on this.
