Somehow we weathered and witnessed
A nation that isn't broken
but simply unfinished
There is always light
if only we're brave enough to see it
if only we're brave enough to be it.
— Amanda Gorman
I spent 6 months working on this piece, trying to figure out what it means to become an American citizen in 2020, as the country unravels.
The surprise? I wrote myself into grit and optimism.
It's time to change the American story. 💪🏼
My sister put together a list of a few black businesses that we can replace some of our everyday brands with. This is essential if we want change. Let’s not talk about it anymore let’s be about it! A THREAD:
The bishop of St. John's Church says her church was used as a "prop" for Trump's violent messaging on the protests. She condemned his using tear gas on peaceful protesters for a photo op as "antithetical to everything" followers of Jesus should believe. https://t.co/FfkzTtrBsP
My dear friend, Samuel Oliver-Bruno, was critically injured in a car accident this year. A gentle and loving father, he is now fighting for his life, 2000 miles away from his family. Please share their story & help raise $20K to #SupportSamuel's recovery!

This is the most wrenching story I've told. We met when Samuel lived in sanctuary at my church, choosing 11mo of lockdown (pre-covid) over separation from his family. But they were still torn apart. Let's give in support as they face the unimaginable 🙏 #FamiliesBelongTogether
“What failed in Europe [and the US] is not liberal democracy but postcolonial arrogance. There was no lack of information, language ability, or time to learn what had happened in China. There was a lack of relating Chinese disasters to ‘us’.”

My great-grandparents’ grave in Fujian, 1971. Finally had a chance to visit for myself in 2018. The woods are totally overgrown now, but the grave still stands, designed like a chair as a symbol of rest. 🍊🌿 #QingmingFestival#remember
Today is Tomb-Sweeping Day, when Chinese families reunite to pay respect to their ancestors. What is your favorite tradition?
If you can't visit graves this year, post a pic of a tombstone and an 🍊 emoji offering for your ancestor. It’s the thought that counts! #LoveFromHome
'The only time religious freedom is invoked is in the name of bigotry and discrimination. I'm tired of it' — @AOC just flipped the entire ‘religious freedom’ argument on its head
All April @NPRCodeSwitch has got stories about who we are and who counts in 2020.
Today's episode coincides with #CensusDay -- a day set aside to raise awareness about the Census and it's TOUGH year for that (for a few reasons):
“Switching back and forth between languages has never been my job; it’s the only way of life I know. I’ve been my own interpreter for 20 years.”
Love Sharon’s voice. Can’t wait for the worlds you’ll bridge in stories to come!
This week on @SinicaPodcast: Huihan Lie, founder of the genealogical research startup @mychinaroots, and his colleagues @chrislynchoo and Clotilde Yap talk family history and ancestry — and what scandalous details are sometimes unearthed once we go digging https://t.co/HPtvr8nDmt
