@Iaintshiityet@theraccoonfeeds@turrible_tao Well that’s part of the “cultural problems” I mentioned. Both the culture of the education system (outside of the teachers themselves) with schools not empowered to discipline kids, and the culture at home, with kids not taught “THIS is how you behave at school”.
@theraccoonfeeds@TheRealDrewFain@turrible_tao That’s what they’re saying. They are, obviously, still attempting to teach and to reach these kids. They’re not saying “we’re not going to try”.
But they’re saying the situation is worsening - that we have a problem - and people like you are just saying “just teach harder”.
@theraccoonfeeds@TheRealDrewFain@turrible_tao So these teachers are noticing a big, worsening societal issue, and you think they should just keep quiet about it, not look for any solutions or offer any warning that we have a problem? In fact you think sounding the alarm about this problem is just whining?
@theraccoonfeeds@TheRealDrewFain@turrible_tao That is (very obviously) a change of subject than the one being discussed - teachers are screaming “there’s a big problem with the pre-school environment of an unusual number of children” and you’re just saying “heh, teachers suck”. Very simple minded, honestly.
@theraccoonfeeds@turrible_tao Poor teachers can be criticised when appropriate. But when their complaint is that a larger proportion than normal of children are starting school utterly unprepared, saying “that’s due to poor teachers” is dumb, and misses the cultural problems that should actually be addressed.
@theraccoonfeeds@turrible_tao Teachers certainly need to take blame for a proportion of kids’ education. But what they’re saying is that kids are turning up to school utterly unprepared for an educational environment. Unable to listen to instructions. Unable to sit still. No attention span. That’s on parents.
@theraccoonfeeds@turrible_tao How much responsibility do you think parents should take for their children’s education and educational readiness? 0%? 50%?
How much difference do you think the pre-school home environment makes in long term outcomes for a child?
@theraccoonfeeds@turrible_tao The problem is 99% parents. Kids showing up to school unprepared to learn and not supported at home is the problem. Kids from supportive homes will learn and thrive at school as they should, kids whose parents just sit them in front of a screen during formative years will fail.
@maxi_stacks@TheBlightaga@AmiriKing At what point do you draw a line? Should grenades be regulated? Bazookas? Nukes? We probably agree on the need to regulate weapons at some point, it’s just a matter of where the line is drawn. In my view, life in the UK would be made more dangerous if people could buy handguns.
@maxi_stacks@TheBlightaga@AmiriKing No offence but facts don’t care about feelings. The Texas crime and murder rates are far higher per capita than the UK, or even compared to only London. Adding guns to the UK would NOT help make people safer.
@maxi_stacks@TheBlightaga@AmiriKing You changed the subject and avoided my question. To answer yours, no, it’s wise to design laws aided by large scale data analysis, essentially analysis of multiple situations. Hard to think of many situations in the UK which would be improved by easy access to lots of guns.
@maxi_stacks@TheBlightaga@AmiriKing Do you think this situation we’re discussing would likely have been better or worse if those intruders all had guns?
@maxi_stacks@TheBlightaga@AmiriKing The homeowner got his shotgun and wrestled with one of the men. The gun went off and his son got shot. Thankfully the men didn’t have guns themselves.
@TyoMad4Life @TheBlightaga@AmiriKing The only person who had a gun was the homeowner. The gun that went off was his. If this was in the US, the attackers would have had guns, and it would likely have gone very differently.
