Had a blast discussing The Cracked Mirror on @BBCScotland's Big Scottish Book Club alongside @Damian_Barr, @sarapascoe and @ladycariad. The show airs next wednesday:

🚨 Exclusive: Screen stars Alan Cumming & Sam Heughan are demanding a rethink on Scottish Government cuts which have led to the shutdown of Creative Scotland’s key fund for artists, describing its demise as “devastating” & “really tragic.” 🚨

The Good Books, @Damian_Barr: ‘James Baldwin’s voice is as urgent now as it ever was’
The Scottish author on reading for the #BigScottishBookClub, his love of Jackie Kay’s latest poetry and being inspired by James Baldwin. https://t.co/VVhFD7E9zK
Also sad to see that 950 of the libraries left (one in three) have reduced their opening hours, with at least three councils halving local provision. You have to assume that's driven by funding pressure, not user need, or long-term ambition

Big talks about life and love, death and loss for this thoughtful program. Specifically, i spoke about my friendship with Diana Athill and doing a television interview called Final Say, which was only to be broadcast after her death.
I am horrified by news of the attack in Edinburgh.
I am grateful to the police and emergency services for their bravery in apprehending the suspect and for their speedy response in attending to the victims.
The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.
There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims. I know it is not who we are as a country.
Though it hasn’t become a national issue, there have in recent weeks been arson attacks on mosques, street attacks on those perceived to be Muslim, and now this. An issue that needs to be taken seriously. https://t.co/qSy59zMp9N
"The party's decided who's the best person to take on Nigel Farage."
"And I'm afraid they've come to the conclusion that that's not Keir Starmer."
@ayeshahazarika says the PM has resigned because of the threat Reform poses to the two-party system.

🧵 What about the other by-elections tonight? Aberdeen South will be a test of 3 things, the politics of oil and gas, impact of Murrell scandal, and whether the unionist right is able to avoid the splits they saw in the Holyrood elections. All came up in our focus group.
NYT: A major flu outbreak has sickened nearly 160 troops at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas weeks after Defense Secretary Hegseth announced that U.S. troops would no longer be required to be vaccinated for the flu, defense officials said.

Nearly 60% turnout for a by election is quite the feat. My take from spending so much time talking to voters in Makerfield is the contest has been genuinely energising for people and quite a good example of democratic engagement (some issues like misinfo aside)
