On this day in 1945, the Soviet Red Army raised the hammer and sickle over the Reichstag in Berlin, bringing an end to fascist tyranny over Europe.

In defeating the Nazis, the Soviets had lost 27 million lives. Over 80,000 lives were lost just for the capture of Berlin alone.
